# Limits and policies

The operating limits that affect how you plan an instance. Backups Paid plans: one disk backup a day, seven kept (7). Recovery point objective: 24 hours. Free: no daily backups. Free $0, 1000 GB outbound per calendar month. Account One instance until the first successful monthly renewal; several afterward. Machine Each instance is one [dedicated machine ](https://docs.lathe.live/machine). Regions The available locations are listed on the create form, by `GET /locations `, and by `list_plans `. Changing plan Up: the difference for the rest of the period is charged now. Down: your instance moves to a smaller machine, keeping its data and its address, and is down while the data is copied; the daily backups taken on the machine it leaves do not come with it. The unused part of the bigger plan comes back as credit on your next invoice, and the smaller price applies from then on. A move down is refused while the data, the engine memory floors or the apps would not fit the smaller plan.

Plan-specific hardware, prices, engine memory floors, and connection limits are returned by `GET /plans `and `list_plans `.
